Ending The Community College Stigma

The stigma surrounding going to community college is out in full force and must stop.  Many people believe that community college isn’t “real college” or that community college is for failures, the course load is easier.  These ideals are nothing but false. Community college offers a different lifestyle and the course load is just as rigorous as a four year program.

In a 2016-2017 study out of Columbia University, there were 5.8 million students enrolled in a two-year community college program. Of the 5.8 million enrolled, 2.1 million were full-time students and 3.7 million were part-time students. With 81% of those who enter community college stated that they wanted to transfer to a four year program, 33% actually went on to complete a four year program.

Steve Robinson, president of Owens Community College in Toledo, Ohio decided to attack the stigma head on.  So, he started an online campaign and sparked the #EndCCStigma movement. In an interview, Robinson said: “…it hit me that this is a stigma issue. I’m a direct person, so I’m trying to amplify what people have said about how inaccurate the stigma is.”

As a community college student, I am not ashamed of my decision to attend community college. I am still receiving a quality education at a  low cost.  Please join me in the effort to #EndCCStigma.
